Where clarity becomes capability. Where leaders regain their edge.

I’m John McLaughlan, Non-executive Director and Executive Coach. I collaborate with senior leaders, boards, and founders to eliminate critical blind spots, allowing them to take bold, de-risked action with absolute certainty.

What I do

I work at the intersection of strategy, behaviour and leadership, where most organisational problems are felt but rarely named.

There is usually one high-consequence decision that makes you miss a beat. The one that forces you to take a breath before speaking in the boardroom. It keeps returning with strong opinions but putting a name behind it carries consequence and risk.

So, it drifts.

Decision drift is expensive. The longer it sits, the more cost, exposure and internal doubt build.

I work with C-suite leaders, senior executives and founders who need a disciplined space to resolve it properly. In focused one to one sessions, we cut through noise using a structured framework that captures assumptions, constraints and consequences so progress is visible and measurable. Every session ends with a defined action that moves the decision forward. When decision drift stops, ownership sharpens, execution aligns and delivery waste reduces.

If a specific decision came to mind while reading this, we should talk in confidence before it resurfaces again.

Explore engagement pathways below.

The process

How it works

Not everyone knows whether coaching is right for them.

This process is designed to give leaders a structured, low-pressure way to explore one live issue, experience the value of supported reflection and challenge, and then decide whether deeper support would actually be useful.

Some people leave with clarity and next steps. Others choose to continue into deeper diagnostic work or ongoing leadership development. The decision is always guided by what is genuinely useful for the individual, not by pressure to continue.

Step 1

Decision Clarity Intro

15 minutes | No cost

A focused conversation to identify the decision, pressure point, or recurring leadership pattern worth exploring.

Step 2

Leadership Actualisation Snapshot

Focused diagnostic session | £99 introductory access

A structured diagnostic session designed to pressure-test one live issue and identify what may be driving delay, friction, uncertainty, or stalled movement.

Step 3

Snapshot Summary & Reflection Report

Following the session, you receive a concise written summary covering:

  • key observations
  • recurring themes
  • visible tensions
  • suggested next steps
  • recommendation

Sometimes the right answer is clarity and action rather than ongoing coaching.

Step 4

Snapshot Debrief Conversation

30 minutes | Included

A focused conversation to walk through the report, clarify observations, pressure-test next steps, and determine whether deeper work is required.

Step 5

Decision Point

At this stage you choose the right next move.

You may:

  1. pause and implement independently
  2. continue into Discovery for deeper diagnostic work
  3. begin the Leadership Actualisation Pathway for ongoing development and support

No pressure. No obligation. Just the next useful step.

The results you can expect

What leaders commonly notice over time

Whether through Discovery, ongoing executive engagement, or board-level support, leaders consistently report practical shifts in how they think, decide, and operate under pressure. These are not performance guarantees. They are recurring patterns observed in high-consequence environments where clarity directly influences exposure.

Decisions move faster and carry stronger ownership

Trade-offs are surfaced early. Assumptions are named. Responsibility becomes explicit rather than implied. Decisions feel deliberate and defensible, even when stakes are high.

A man smiling as he ticks off items on a to-do list, seated at his desk.

Internal friction reduces, restoring strategic capacity

Unresolved tension and competing priorities stop quietly draining attention. Cognitive bandwidth returns to direction, sequencing, and disciplined execution.

Two women sit on a bench in a park, holding to-go coffee cup, talking and laughing.

Judgement steadies under scrutiny

Confidence becomes internally anchored rather than condition-dependent. Leaders respond rather than react. Composure holds when pressure rises.

Priorities stabilise and boundaries hold

Energy is no longer dispersed by unexamined obligations. Accountability strengthens. Conversations become clearer and less circular.

A woman sits at a desk, she is looking at a calendar which has days filled in. Her phone is face down on the desk.

Patterns are recognised earlier, before drift compounds

Reflection becomes structured and forward-facing. Emerging risk signals are noticed sooner, reducing the likelihood of hesitation or ambiguity evolving into material exposure.

A woman writes in her journal while sitting in a comfortable chair.

Over time, this commonly results in:

  • Faster decision cycles with stronger accountability
  • Reduced leadership drag within critical conversations
  • Sharper prioritisation discipline across teams
  • Greater steadiness during periods of volatility
  • More consistent alignment between strategy and execution

This work strengthens your ability to navigate complexity with clarity, discipline, and composure. The clarity established becomes a structural advantage that compounds across decisions, teams, and strategic direction.

About me

Executive coach & mentor

I work with senior leaders and boards where decisions carry consequence.

For more than twenty years, I have operated in environments where scrutiny is real, governance matters and hesitation compounds cost. My focus is strengthening decision reliability at senior level.

When clarity strengthens, ownership becomes explicit. Conversations sharpen. Execution aligns.

I provide a confidential, structured environment where leaders can examine difficult decisions clearly, test assumptions rigorously and move forward with confidence.

  • Boards value the steadiness.
  • Executives value the clarity.
  • Organisations value the alignment.

Why Board Independence Is Not Enough During a Corporate Turnaround

Reports of a possible Diageo board reshuffle expose a wider governance tension. Independent directors may have permission to challenge, but effective oversight during a turnaround also requires enough sector knowledge to recognise which executive assumptions carry the greatest risk.

Compliance Is Not Governance: Why Organisations Confuse Evidence with Judgement

Compliance proves obligation. Governance directs judgement. When organisations confuse the two, they risk creating false assurance: evidence without effect and structure without control.

AI Is Reshaping C-Suite Roles, But Accountability Is the Harder Test

AI is no longer only a technology or productivity issue. It is changing senior leadership roles, board oversight and the ownership of judgement when decisions become faster, more automated and less visible.
