"You Are a Zen Master"
I recently interviewed for a NED role.
I did not get the role, but I did receive something more valuable. Clear feedback.
One comment stayed with me.
“You are a Zen master.”
The follow-up question was the real moment of insight. It forced me to reflect not on how I work, but on what actually changes when I am in the room.
"“In one hour, I will shift how you think.
In one day, I will shift how your board thinks.
From that point, the organisation’s future state becomes clearer, decisions begin to unlock, and culture starts to move towards its purpose.”"
My answer was this:
“In one hour, I will shift how you think.
In one day, I will shift how your board thinks.
From that point, the organisation’s future state becomes clearer, decisions begin to unlock, and culture starts to move towards its purpose.”
The experience was a reminder that boards value calm, but they appoint impact.
Insight earns trust. Clarity at speed earns the seat.
China’s latest economic pressure moves reveal a wider leadership issue: many organisations have built efficiency into their operating models without fully testing where that efficiency has created strategic constraint.
Reports of a possible Diageo board reshuffle expose a wider governance tension. Independent directors may have permission to challenge, but effective oversight during a turnaround also requires enough sector knowledge to recognise which executive assumptions carry the greatest risk.
