Burnt Toast

How small moments reveal how leaders treat experience, and why retaining learning leads to clearer decisions and less wasted effort.

Burnt Toast

Burnt Toast

You put a slice of bread in the toaster and turn away for a moment. The doorbell chimes, the dog barks; this happens a thousand times, and no dramatic outcomes. Then the toaster pops, and you know straight away that something has gone a little too far this time.

Not ruined.
Just darker than planned.

And you pause. Because a decision is waiting for you, looming over you just like the smoke is looming over the toaster.

Do you scrape?

Or do you throw it away and put another slice on?

Most people never think twice about this moment. But it quietly reveals how we treat experience everywhere in life. At work, in career decisions, or when trying to scale a business?

Throwing the toast away looks efficient.
Clean slate. Fresh start. No thinking required.
But what actually goes in the bin is more than bread.

  • Time already invested.
  • Energy already spent.
  • Material already used.
  • And most importantly, insight already earned.

Scraping is not about rescuing something broken.
It is about recognising value before you discard it.

And when people do learn to work this way, the effect is immediate.

  • Decisions stop looping.
  • Energy stops leaking into the wrong places.
  • Work feels lighter, not because there is less of it, but because it is better aligned.

People describe clearer choices, steadier momentum, and far less wasted effort.
Quite early.

Life works in the same way.

Projects overshoot. Decisions feel right at the time, yet awkward later. Effort goes in, and the return is not what you expected.

That does not mean you are failing.
It means you are operating in the real world.

Growth does not come from endless fresh starts. It comes from carrying learning forward with intention, from mistakes to insight, then impact.

Over several years, I worked on what became the AMM methodology. The thinking was solid. But it had no clear place to land.

It would have been easy to abandon it.
Instead, I kept it close.

I scraped.

Not because it was broken but because it contained value that had not yet found its form.

When Insight to Impact emerged as a structured leadership program with a high ROI, the pieces fell into place. The work did not need fixing. It needed application.

This is how I coach.

  • Not to repair.
  • Not to motivate.
  • But to amplify.

To help people use what they already know more effectively. To reduce wasted effort. To turn insight into impact and progress.

If you want to explore this for yourself, let’s start with a Clarity Snapshot. A short, structured reflection that helps you see what you are already carrying and where it might be better used. It is exploratory, not a commitment. (You can message me in confidence for more information.)

So, the next time the toaster pops, pause.

Ask yourself a better question than 'is this good or bad?'

What is here that can take me forward?

Scrape
or throw away.

Not as judgment. As direction.

What has been your 'Burnt Toast' moment of 2025, and how could you apply it in 2026?
